PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Update: For Families of High School Seniors

July 2, 2020

Dear High School Seniors and Families,

The one constant in our lives these days is that things are constantly changing as we continue to navigate the Covid-19 pandemic.

With some insight into the weeks ahead, I’m writing to provide an update on end of year events:

According to the Governor’s Executive Orders for New York City, large gathering/event venues remain closed.  The Hilton Garden Inn is currently cancelling events through the beginning of August (which includes our delayed date for prom).  Therefore, our Senior Prom is cancelled.  Refund checks for families who purchased prom tickets prior to school closing are being processed now and will be mailed to students’ homes.

We continue to be unable to conduct an in-person ceremony.   We will be hosting a Drive-Thru Celebration of the Class of 2020 on Thursday, July 9th from 10am to noon (families will be given a specific time slot).   This happening will allow us to recognize and celebrate our graduates, distribute high school yearbooks and senior tee-shirts.  Students will have the opportunity to be photographed in their cap and gown by a professional photographer.  Please know that social distancing protocols will be implemented.  An invite and specific details for the event will be sent early next week.

Senior dues were used to cover the cost of senior yearbooks and cap and gowns; the remaining monies collected will be refunded to families.

We remain committed to celebrating with you, the Petrides High School Class of 2020, in person, when the time is right.  While we have some ideas, we will collaborate with our Student Government to plan a meaningful celebration.

Regarding diplomas:

Schools have not yet received their annual shipment of diplomas, we expect they will be available and prepared for distribution in the fall.  We will provide guidance for picking up diplomas when they are ready.  Any recent graduate needing proof of high school diploma before they are ready should contact me via email ( for assistance.
