Homework Policy- Homework is assigned at least 3-4 times a week.  A reading and/or writing assignment will be given.  These assignments will usually be done in their Reading Response or Writer’s Notebooks.  It is the responsibility of each student to complete each task on time and to the best of their ability.  I will always accept late homework, but the student will not receive full credit, except for certain circumstances.  Students will also be required to revise any work that does not display their best effort.

Reading Workshop-  Independent reading is a vital aspect of our class work and homework.  In the reading workshop we will explore many genres, have book talks, and literature circles.  Each reading day we will be reading independently in class and for homework.  Reading texts on or above grade level is crucial for increasing the student’s reading stamina and comprehension.  All reading is to be recorded and a response should be written.  Students are to be prepared with an independent reading book each double period in class!

Writing Workshop-  Writing is another major part of our class.  Each student will be writing in a writer’s notebook, on legal pads, or looseleaf during this period.  The writer’s notebook functions as a place to collect, share thoughts, and gather ideas for future writing pieces.  This year we will be publishing narrative, persuasive, and informative pieces of writing.  The published pieces will be kept in a Writing Portfolio in the classroom.

    Vocabulary and Skills

    - Vocabulary words will be given to the whole class based on the texts we are reading in class and tests will be assigned every few weeks based on these words.

    - Skills such as comprehension and test taking strategies, and grammar and conventions will be taught in whole group and small group lessons based on the student’s individual needs.
