2026-2027 School Year

Summer assignments help elementary students stay engaged in learning and build confidence as they prepare for the next grade level. Research on “summer learning loss,” often called the “summer slide,” shows that students can lose important reading and math skills during long breaks from school. Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder found that students may lose 30–40% of their school-year gains in math and 10–20% in reading over the summer if academic skills are not practiced regularly. Summer assignments encourage students to continue reading, thinking critically, and practicing foundational skills so they return to school ready to learn and succeed.
